You see, in Alice in Wonderland there is this part where Alice is running and running. She stops and realizes that she's not moved an inch since she began running. The Red Queen quips something of the like: "In this land you have to do all the running you can to stay in the same place!"

In evolution the term applies to how organisms have to continually evolve just to maintain ability to live in their niche space and survive predation.

Right now I feel as though I'm living in a land ruled by the Red Queen.
